Ijen Crater is a nature reserve Ijen Park is located between Banyuwangi and Bondowoso District, East Java. This crater exactly located at the top of Mount Ijen which is one of a series of volcanoes in East Java such as Bromo, Semeru and Merapi. Another uniqueness of this crater has a level of acidity is very high with almost close to zero and the temperature of the crater is 200 degrees Celsius. In addition to altitude is located at 2368 meters above sea level. Posis crater is located in the middle of the largest caldera on the island of Java. The caldera size about 20 miles. The crater size is about 960 meters x 600 meters with a depth of 200 meters. This crater is located at a depth of more than 300 meters below the caldera wall.
This crater is a large lake with a bluish-green mist and smoke of the sulfur that is stunning. In addition, cold air with temperatures 10 degrees Celsius, the temperature might reach 2 degrees Celsius will increase the sensation of its own experience. Various plants that exist only in the highlands can also be found here, such as Edelweis Flowers and Pine.

Mt. Ijen

Ijen is a fascinating mountain in East Java, very near to the Strait of Bali. It takes a 4wd jeep drive from the nearest hotel to the base camp from where you can hike all the way to the summit. The walk up to the crater rim takes 60-90 minutes. It’s pretty steep and the path is just one-way so there is no need for any guidance. Halfway is a small post where the sulphur-workers take a break. The magnificent turquoise sulfur lake of Kawah Ijen lies at 2148 m above sea level and is surrounded by the volcano sheer crater walls. The vent is a source of sulfur and collectors work here, making the trek up to the crater and down to the lake every day. Sulfur collectors hike up in the morning and return around 1 pm when the clouds roll in. They carry shoulder basket of pure sulfur from a quarry on the lakes edge under the shadow of the sheer walls of the crater. The mineral at Kawah Ijen is purer and is worth commercial exploitation despite the horrendous labor involved: Javas homegrown sulfur is a natural source of sulfuric acid, in great demand in the oil-refining business and in the production of fertilizers. At night it can be pretty cold up there.

An absolute must is a handkerchief to put in front of your mouth and nose to avoid inhalation of the sulphur gases.
